This picturesque town, 123 km west of Panama City (2 hours from the Panama City) is nestled in the crater of a giant extinct volcano. The volcano erupted 3 million years ago with such force that it blew up its top off, creating a crater 5km across- one of the largest in Americas. The crater gradually filled with rainwater, and a rather large lake resulted.
The lake level fell markedly between 25,000 and 10,000 BC. Eventually, through erosion or collapse, a breach opened at the present sit e of Chorro de Las Mozas (Young Women's Falls) and the entire lake drained. Later, the Indians moved into the valley to farm its fertile soil, but to the date no one has attempted to determine when the arrived. There is also some impressive- looking petroglyph in the northwestern corner of the valley, but they have yet to be studied. Today, what you are going to find here as you enter the volcano's crater is a tranquil town ringed by verdant forest and jagged peaks. Sparking creeks add to the beauty of the Valley, and at 1000m above sea level El Valle is much cooler than Panama's coastal towns.
El Valle is best known for its Sunday handicrafts market- a popular weekly event at which Indians trade vegetables and sell lovely baskets, painted clay figures and carved serving trays.
During your visit to El Valle, you will visit the following places:
"Chorro El Macho, petroglyphs, the Natural Springs, the Níspero Botanical Garden and some other point of interest. If you get to go on Sunday, then you will visit the Sunday Indigenous Market.
Includes: Transportation from Panama City, English/ Spanish speaking guide, entrance fee to main attractions, and lunch at a local restaurant.
